Lone Star Conference men’s basketball league play has started, and six teams are 2-0: DBU, Eastern New Mexico, No. 4 Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State, No. 9 St. Mary’s and No. 11 West Texas A&M. New league member UT Dallas is the only team to not play a conference game yet.
 
Of the 17 LSC teams, three remain unbeaten on the season: WT (9-0), LCU (8-0) and StMU (7-0).
 
The LSC has four teams ranked in the top 15 of the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Poll: LCU (5), StMU (13), St. Edward’s (14) and WT (15). Angelo State is receiving votes.
 
ENMU senior forward Jose Murillo was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Conference Information Directors of America National Player of the Week on Dec. 2.
 
Conference games continues this week with four games on Thursday and six on Saturday.
 
In non-conference play, LSC teams have gone 37-22 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams.
 
DBU is the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the preseason poll. StMU senior guard Damani Claxton was voted preseason player of the year.
 
The LSC men’s basketball tournament will feature the top eight teams and is set for March 5, 7-8 at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Tickets will go on sale in February.
 
Due to being NCAA Division II provisional members, new league member UT Dallas and Sul Ross State are not eligible for the LSC tournament but are able to win the LSC regular season title and postseason awards.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Terrance Ramirez, Midwestern State, G, Jr., Applied Arts and Sciences, Grapevine, Texas
Midwestern State junior guard Terrance Ramirez averaged 25.5 points, five assists and two steals over a 2-0 start to conference play against Angelo State and UT Permian Basin. Ramirez shot 68.8 percent from the floor and hit 11 of 16 three-point attempts. He also had three rebounds and went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. Ramirez fueled a second-half comeback against ASU by scoring 22 of game-high 25 points in the second half, hitting seven 3s – including four straight. His eight assists against UTPB is tied for the third most in a single game in the conference this season.
 
DEFENSIVE
Antonio Pusateri, Lubbock Christian, F, Jr., Business Administration, San Francisco, Calif.
Lubbock Christian junior forward Antonio Pusateri pulled down 18 defensive rebounds, blocked four shots and averaged a double double to help lead the No. 4-ranked Chaps to a pair of conference wins over UT Permian Basin and Angelo State. Pusateri, who averaged 15 points and 2.5 assists per game and also had a steal, led a unit that allowed just 60.5 points per game and 40.7 percent shooting. Against UTPB, Pusateri registered his league-leading fourth double double of the year (19 points, 12 boards). He blocked two shots in each game as LCU also stayed unbeaten on the season at 8-0.
