Texas Woman’s and St. Edward’s claimed the 12th annual Lone Star Conference Academic Excellence Awards presented by Balfour, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday (Aug. 19).
Texas Woman’s captured its third consecutive and record eighth overall women’s award, while St. Edward’s earned the men’s honor for the first time as the athletic departments with the highest collective team grade-point average (GPA) for the 2024-25 academic year.
“Congratulations to the student-athletes at Texas Woman’s and St. Edward’s on this most prestigious award,” LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner said. “We are thrilled to honor these two institutions for their outstanding academic success and their continued commitment to excellence in the classroom.”
TWU had 27 student-athletes over five sports with perfect 4.0 GPAs, while SEU had 14 over six men’s sports.
For the second consecutive year, the team with the overall highest GPA in the conference was the West Texas A&M women’s golf team. The Lady Buffs posted a 3.910 GPA.
TWU (women’s basketball, women’s soccer and stunt), SEU (men’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field and volleyball), LCU (men’s soccer, women’s indoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field) and WNMU (men’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis) all tied for the most sport academic champions with three each.
On the women’s side, all of TWU’s winners repeated titles as did the women’s golf team and UT Tyler softball team.
On the men’s side, StMU had the top baseball GPA for the fourth straight year. The LCU men’s soccer team and UT Tyler men’s cross country team made it three consecutive titles. The WT men’s basketball team and WNMU men’s golf team won back-to-back crowns.
The overall award winners were determined by a point system, with points distributed according to finish by sport in those that the LSC sponsors after a conference-wide comparison of team GPAs. The member institution with the highest team GPA in each sport was named the Sport Academic Champion and earned five (5) points toward the overall award. The runner-up in each sport picked up four (4) points and third-place three (3) points toward the overall award. Any program with a Team GPA of 2.00 and above earned one (1) point. Points for each member institution were totaled by gender and then divided by that institution’s number of counter programs in that gender to arrive at the comparison value.
