West Texas A&M graduate and professional kicker Sergio Castillo was selected as the 2025 inductee to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor, league officials announced on Thursday (Aug. 7).
Castillo, who is currently playing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League, is the 64th inductee into the
LSC Hall of Honor, which distinguishes outstanding individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.
“We are thrilled to announce the addition of Sergio Castillo to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor,” LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner said. “Sergio was an outstanding student-athlete who had tremendous success during his time in the league and still holds multiple kicking records. He is most deserving of this honor.”
Castillo is the all-time leading scorer in West Texas A&M football history (437) and holds the LSC career record for most extra points made and attempted (251-for-255). He led the conference in scoring in both 2012 (149) and 2013 (129). Over his collegiate career from 2011-2013, Castillo connected for 62 field goals – with a long of 56 yards – and had a string of 64 straight extra-point attempts made, which is also a league record. He was a part of the 2012 LSC championship team and helped the Buffs reach the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2012 and national quarterfinals in 2013.
The La Joya, Texas product claimed first team All-American honors in 2012 and 2013 and was a four-time all-LSC selection. He won the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award, which is presented to the nation’s top placekicker for excellence on the field and in their community.
Following WT, Castillo singed as an NFL free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2014 and later played for the New York Jets in 2020, connecting on eight field goals over six games with a long kick of 55 yards.

He was also a CFL All-Star in 2019 with the BC Lions, hitting 41 of 45 field goals for a league-leading 91.1% success rate.
In Winnipeg’s 33-25 overtime Grey Cup win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Castillo was 5-for-5 on field goals and converted an extra point. His play also helped Winnipeg reach the Grey Cup in 2024.
Castillo was inducted into the WT Hall of Champions in April of 2024. He and his wife, Adriana, a former Lady Buff soccer player, have one son, Jared.
Castillo is the fourth Buff to be enshrined by the LSC, joining fellow football star Dustin Vaughan (2023) and volleyball standouts Sarah Butler Carthel (2008) and Julie Myatt O’Dell (2005).
Castillo was chosen by a panel of athletic administrators throughout the league.
