In the first week featuring all Lone Star Conference football games, Western Oregon, No. 6 Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, No. 11 UT Permian Basin and No. 17 Central Washington all earned wins. Week 4 will feature four conference matchups all on Saturday. ASU and ENMU are idle.
WNMU is leading the league in total offense at 466.5 yards per game, followed by CWU (457.7) and WT (434.8). UTPB is scoring a league-high 39.3 points per game.
WOU has the conference’s top-rated defense, allowing just 325.7 yards per game. UTPB is next at 331.3 yards per game then ASU (348.3). Opponents are scoring just 17 points per game against UTPB, which leads the league.
MSU is the least penalized team in the league, averaging just 27.3 yards per game.
The LSC has had one national player of the week of the season as UTPB junior linebacker Tristan Exline was named D2Football.com’s
National Defensive Player of the Week after the first week of the season. Exline is the league’s
Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Kanon Gibson, UT Permian Basin, QB, Jr., Energy Land Management, Wink, Texas
UT Permian Basin junior quarterback Kanon Gibson accounted for five touchdowns – three passing and two rushing – to lead the No. 11-ranked Falcons to a 43-30 road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Gibson was 18 of 26 passing for 316 and no interceptions. He rushed for a game-high 81 yards on 22 carries. With the score tied at 23-23 with under 13 minutes to play, Gibson ran for a 20-yard score to give the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish. On the very next play of UTPB’s next drive, Gibson found Jaylon Tillman for a 70-yard TD pass. He added another fourth-quarter TD just over two minutes later, this time a 34-yard strike to TJ McKenzie.
DEFENSIVE
Shamareon McKinnon, Angelo State, CB, Jr., Interdisciplinary Studies
Angelo State junior cornerback Shamareon McKinnon returned an interception for a touchdown, forced a fumble he also recovered and had three solo tackles to help fuel the No. 6-ranked Rams to a 56-27 win over Western New Mexico. McKinnon’s pick-six came late in the first half as the Mustangs were attempting to bring the game within one-possession. It was just the second interception against WNMU this season and also extended the Rams’ streak to 19 consecutive games with a pick. McKinnon’s forced fumble and recovery came in the third quarter.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Cyris Taylor, Western Oregon, So., Undecided, Dallas, Texas
Western Oregon sophomore Cyris Taylor blocked a punt that was recovered and returned for a touchdown, made a tackle on a kickoff return and also handled kick and punt return duties to help lead a 66-3 conference-opening win over Sul Ross State. Taylor also added to the victory by making a 49-yard reception – the longest of the game. Taylor’s block came in the second quarter and was scooped up by Terayon Sweet. Taylor returned a kickoff 22 yards in the second quarter.
