Lone Star Conference men’s soccer is officially underway. All 11 teams have played at least one match.
 
Defending NCAA Division II national champion Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian are 2-0. UT Tyler (1-0), St. Edward’s (1-0-1), UT Dallas (1-0-1) and Texas A&M International (0-0-1) also remain unbeaten.
 
MSU was voted the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the preseason poll. MSU’s Parker Plaxco, Davis Mays and Jake Morris were voted preseason players of the year.
 
The LSC men's soccer tournament will be comprised of the top six teams and is scheduled for Oct. 30 (quarterfinals), Nov. 4 (semifinals) and Nov. 7 (final). The quarterfinals will be held on campus of the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds; the semifinals are hosted by the No. 1 and No. 2 seed; and title match will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
 
All LSC men’s soccer teams are eligible to win the regular season title and advance to the LSC and NCAA Division II postseason tournaments.
 
Longtime MSU head coach Doug Elder was recently named to the LSC Hall of Honor.

OFFENSIVE
Jose Ortiz, Midwestern State, F, Sr., Spanish, Arlington, Texas
Midwestern State senior forward Jose Ortiz tied a school record and set a UTD Soccer Complex record with four goals in a season-opening 5-0 win over Cal State East Bay. Ortiz scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute, his second shortly after halftime (51st), his hat trick in the 62nd minute and added his final goal just 11 second later. Ortiz’s final two goals set a school record for fastest back-to-back goals. The feat also ranks fourth in NCAA Division II history. Ortiz took eight shots over a 2-0 start to the season for the No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Mustangs.
 
DEFENSIVE
Timmy Hollenbeck, St. Edward’s, D, Sr., Political Science Pre-Law, Hutto, Texas
St. Edward’s senior defender Timmy Hollenbeck helped the Hilltoppers off to an unbeaten start to the year which included a road shutout of No. 20 Cal State Dominguez Hills. Hollenbeck played all 90 minutes in the 3-0 upset win. He also led a unit that allowed just seven shots in a season-opening 1-1 tie with Texas A&M International. Hollenbeck was not in the game during TAMIU’s goal.
 
GOALKEEPER
Dante Caffaro, Oklahoma Christian, GK, So., Business, Pra de Minas, Brazil
Oklahoma Christian sophomore goalkeeper Dante Caffaro opened the season with two clean sheets to help the Eagles to their first 2-0 start since the 2022 season. Caffaro made eight saves against Colorado Christian and Drury. He made a late diving stop to keep CC off the scoreboard in the opener then had six stops in a 1-0 road match with Drury.
