Lone Star Conference men’s soccer league play is underway and two teams are off to a 2-0 start: No. 6 Midwestern State and St. Mary’s. West Texas A&M (1-0-1), UT Dallas (0-0-1), DBU (0-0-2) and Oklahoma Christian are also unbeaten (0-0-2).
 
Defending NCAA Division II national champion MSU (8-0-2 overall) improved its unbeaten streak to 20 matches dating back to last season.
 
MSU is scoring a league-high three goals per match and are tied with DBU for allowing a league-low .78 goals per game.
 
StMU sophomore forward Eduardo Ferndnez was named the DCSIDA National Player of the Week on Sept. 15. Fernandez is the first player in program history to win the honor.
 
MSU was voted the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the preseason poll. MSU’s Parker Plaxco, Davis Mays and Jake Morris were voted preseason players of the year.
 
The LSC men's soccer tournament will be comprised of the top six teams and is scheduled for Oct. 30 (quarterfinals), Nov. 4 (semifinals) and Nov. 7 (final). The quarterfinals will be held on campus of the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds; the semifinals are hosted by the No. 1 and No. 2 seed; and title match will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
 
All LSC men’s soccer teams are eligible to win the regular season title and advance to the LSC and NCAA Division II postseason tournaments.
 
Longtime MSU head coach Doug Elder was recently named to the LSC Hall of Honor.

OFFENSIVE

Midwestern State senior forward Parker Plaxco had a hat trick in the span of 18 minutes of a win over Texas A&M International. His play against TAMIU and St. Edward’s helped the No. 6-ranked Mustangs improve their unbeaten streak to 20 matches dating back to last year’s national championship season. Plaxco, who wins the league’s top weekly offensive award for the second straight week, scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 7th minute then followed with goals in the 20th and 25th minutes. It was just the third time anyone in the LSC has scored three goals or more this season. Plaxco leads the league with eight goals.
 
DEFENSIVE
Filipe Bastos, St. Mary’s, D, Gr., MBA, Santa Maria de Faria, Portugal
St. Mary’s graduate student and defender Filipe Bastos spearheaded a 2-0 week to begin conference play against Lubbock Christian and Sul Ross State where the Rattlers allowed just one goal. Bastos also recorded an assist on the game-tying goal in the 11th minute against LCU. Bastos, who played three different defensive positions over the two matches, helped recorded a clean sheet in a 1-0 road match against SRSU.
 
GOALKEEPER
Jake Morris, Midwestern State, GK, Jr., Business Analytics and Information Systems, Parker, Colo.
Midwestern State goalkeeper Jake Morris recorded two clean sheets with eight saves to fuel a 2-0 start to conference play against St. Edward’s and Texas A&M International. Morris, who wins the league’s top weekly goalkeeper award for the second consecutive week, has allowed just one goal over his last four matches for the No. 6-ranked Mustangs. He had a season-high six saves against TAMIU and his play helped MSU beat SEU in Austin for the first time since 2019.
