The Lone Star Conference Volleyball Challenge – all non-conference matches – is complete and five of the 18 teams went 2-0: No. 9 Angelo State, DBU, St. Mary’s, Texas A&M International and UT Permian Basin.
 
Conference play begins this week with 18 matches over Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
 
ASU (10-1), UT Tyler (9-1) and UTPB (5-1) have all lost just one match so far.
 
UTT senior outside hitter Melanie Merrill was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s first national player of the week of the 2026 season on Sept. 1. She is just the second player in program history to win the honor, joining Mikayla Ware (2021).
 
ASU is the favorite to win the LSC regular season title this season, according the preseason poll. ASU’s Madi Parrish, Texas Woman’s Alyssa Rojo and Lubbock Christian’s Camdyn Sears were voted preseason players of the year.
 
The LSC volleyball tournament will feature the top nine teams and is set for Nov. 11-14 at the site of the No. 1 seed.
 
All LSC volleyball teams are eligible to win the regular season title and advance to the LSC and NCAA Division II postseason tournaments.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
Laurene Robinson, St. Mary’s, RS, Gr., Cyber Securit, Bedford, Texas
St. Mary’s graduate student and right-side hitter Laurene Robinson averaged 4.56 kills per set and added four service aces to help the Rattlers to a 2-0 week against Texas Woman’s and UT Tyler during the LSC Challenge Weekend. Robinson had a match-high 24 kills with a .367 hitting percentage,12 digs and three aces as StMU handed UT Tyler its first loss of the season. Robinson also had a double double (17 kills and 11 digs) against TWU. She added seven blocks and two assists on the week. Robinson has had double-digit kills in all 10 matches this year.
 
DEFENSIVE
Nickilah Whatley, UT Permian Basin, MH, Jr., Psychology, Hereford, Texas
UT Permian Basin junior middle hitter Nickilah Whatley had 13 blocks and 12 digs to lead a 2-0 record at the LSC Challenge Weekend against UT Dallas and St. Edward’s. Whatley added 13 kills – eight in a sweep of UTD – three service aces and three assists. Whatley and company allowed just a .140 hitting percentage. In a 3-2 win over SEU, Whatley had a match-high eight blocks with nine digs. She has helped the Falcons to a 5-1 start to the season.
 
SETTER
Haleigh Wilk, St. Mary’s, S, Sr., Exercise & Sport Science, Salado, Texas
St. Mary’s senior setter Haleigh Wilk averaged 10.22 assists per set to fuel the Rattlers to a 2-0 showing against Texas Woman’s and UT Tyler during the LSC Challenge Weekend. Wilk also added 19 digs, eight kills and two service aces. She had a double double (45 assists and 12 digs) against TWU and helped hand UT Tyler its first loss of the season with 47 assists.
 
FRESHMAN
Olivia Pena, Angelo State, S, Fr., Kinesiology, Helotes, Texas
Angelo State freshman setter Olivia Pena dished out 5.5 assists per set to guide a 2-0 LSC Challenge Weekend against West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian. Pena also added 10 digs, a kill and a service ace. She directed a team swing percentage of .250. Pena’s play has helped the No. 9-ranked Belles to a 10-1 record entering league play.
