Men’s Golf: Cameron leads after first two rounds

Cameron’s Garrett Smith wrapped up a stellar day with five birdies on the final nine holes to take the individual lead and give the Aggies a five-stroke lead after the first two rounds at the Firestone Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The annual league event, which features six men's teams, is being held at Trophy Club Country Club in Trophy Club, Texas.

The field played in ideal weather with temperatures in the 70’s Monday at the par-72, 7,000-yard course.

Smith’s individual effort propelled the Aggies to the top of the team leader board at five-under 571 (288- 283). CU is the only team under-par with Smith at 139 (-5) plus three others in the top-11 with Trey Lawson at 145 (+1), Michael Kelly at 146 (+2) and Brady Porter at 147 (+3).

Abilene Christian (576) sits in second place at even-par after a team low-round of 274 in the second round. The Wildcats were led by Alex Carpenter’s seven-under 65, the low round of the championship, and Corbin Renner’s six-under 66 to move into second place heading into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

Midwestern State (580) is third at four-over, followed by West Texas A&M (592), Texas A&M-Commerce (593) and Incarnate Word (604).
