Two teams, individual seek cross country national titles

Two Lone Star Conference teams and one individual have been selected to participate in the 2024 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships November 23 in Sacramento, Calif. Both West Texas A&M teams advanced to the national championship. The men's team earned automatic qualification after finishing third at the South Central Region Championship (Nov. 9) while the WT women's team was selected as an at-large entrant after placing fifth at the regional.
 
West Texas A&M senior William Amponsah is the defending Division II individual champion, winning the 2023 race in a personal-best 29:04.3 as the Buffs posted their best national championship finish with a fourth-place team showing. The Lady Buffs finished sixth in 2023 behind a pair of top 10 individual finishes, including returnee Sarah Koomson (6th, 20:00.0).
 
Dallas Baptist sophomore Lesli Salas was one of 26 individuals selected to compete, making a second straight trip to the season finale. Salas posted a 20:55.8 time for 52nd in the 2023 race. The NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships will be contested at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento The men's 10k race will begin at 12 p.m. CST, followed by the women's race at 1:15 p.m. CST.

Thirty-four teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top three, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 24 teams. Ten additional teams were selected at-large. A minimum of 24 additional individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process.
