The Lone Star Conference baseball season is already three weeks in.
Angelo State and UT Tyler – both nationally-ranked – are each 10-2 and atop the conference standings. They split their four-game series in Week 2.
Six different teams enter Week 4 on winning streaks: Texas A&M-Kingsville (seven), ASU (six), West Texas A&M (six), St. Edward’s (five), UT Tyler (four) and St. Mary’s (four). Lubbock Christian has won seven of its last eight.
ASU is leading the conference in hitting (.408), pitching (3.07 ERA) and fielding (.978). LCU has hit a league-high 22 home runs, led by senior infielder Brevin McCool’s conference-high nine. McCool is also leading the LSC in batting average (.520), RBI (24), runs scored (24), slugging percentage (1.260) and OPS (1.853). SEU’s Kobe Jaramillo and UT Tyler’s Kyle Willis are both 3-0 on the mound, while SEU’s Parker Tennill has four saves to lead the league. Oklahoma Christian’s Tristan Copeland has struck out a league-high 27 batters.
For the second consecutive week to start the season, a player from the LSC won the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Hitter of the Week. McCool
earned the honor after going 10-for-16 with five home runs, three doubles and 10 RBI to lead the Chaps to a road sweep of Sul Ross State. McCool scored 13 runs, walked four times – twice intentionally in the same game – was hit by a pitch and did not strike out. He follows Cameron senior third baseman Lance Barnett, who was honored by the NCBWA on Feb. 6.
ASU was the top pick in the
LSC preseason poll. ASU graduate student and outfielder Jacob Guerrero and UT Tyler senior right-hander Rawley Hector were named
LSC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.
The LSC Baseball Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top seven teams. The opening round is best-of-three series and will be held May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The league’s top seed from the regular season will receive an opening-round bye and host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10. The LSC Tournament Champion will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.
