The first Lone Star Conference football games are in the books as West Texas A&M and No. 8 Angelo State opened the league schedule with road wins. No. 12 UT Permian Basin, No. 18 Central Washington and Midwestern State were idle. To read the Week 2 recaps, click here.
 
Week 3 will feature all 10 LSC teams in action for the first time this season. Saturday’s slate will be comprised of five conference matchups.
 
WT is leading the league in total offense at 502.3 yards per game, followed by Western New Mexico (488.7) and CWU (422.5). WNMU’s offense has found the end zone a conference-best 17 times.
 
UTPB has the conference’s top-rated defense, allowing just 309.5 yards per game. ASU is next at 331 then Eastern New Mexico (333.3). Opponents are scoring just 10.5 point per game against UTPB, which leads the league.
 
CWU and MSU are the least penalized team in the league, averaging just 30 yards per game.
 
The LSC has had one national player of the week of the season as UTPB junior linebacker Tristan Exline was named D2Football.com’s National Defensive Player of the Week after the first week of the season. Exline is the league’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE
RJ Martinez, West Texas A&M, QB, Sr., Management, Austin, Texas
West Texas A&M senior quarterback RJ Martinez threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Buffs to a 58-27 road win over Western New Mexico in the LSC opener for both teams. Martinez was 19 of 28 passing with no interceptions and threw three TDs in the first quarter to set the tone for WT’s first win of the season. He also rushed for 17 yards. Martinez’s play helped the Buffs total 684 yards of total offense – their most since the 2013 season.  
 
DEFENSIVE
Owen Seaver, Angelo State, DE, Gr., Finance, Lampasas, Texas
Angelo State graduate student and defensive end Owen Seaver had eight tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery to lead the No. 8-ranked Rams to a 31-20 conference-opening road win over Eastern New Mexico. Of his tackles, seven were solo and three were for a loss of 10 yards. His fumble recovery came on one of his sacks. Seaver and company are allowing just 15.7 points per game during their 3-0 stat to the season.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Zeek Freeman, Angelo State, KR, Sr., Interdisciplinary Studies, Grand Prairie, Texas
Angelo State senior Zeek Freeman ran back a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to help the No. 8 Rams to a 31-20 LSC-opening road victory over Eastern New Mexico. Freeman’s TD came right after the Greyhounds tied the game 7-7 with 11 minutes left in the second quarter. It was the first kickoff return for a score in the conference this season.
