LSC Indoor Track and Field Release - Week 5

Lone Star Conference men’s and women’s indoor track and field athletes have recorded 97 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks (43 men and 54 women).
 
Of those results, five are the top marks in the country: Angleo State’s 4x400-meter relay team of Jahleel Armstrong, William Opare, Taylor Briggs and Rami Balti (3:07.92); WT’s Esther Conde-Turpin in the women’s 60-meter hurdles (8.30); WT’s Blessing Akintoye in the women’s 400 meters (53.33); WT’s Abigail Abugire in the women’s 800 meters (2:05.92); and WT’s 4x400-meter relay team of Akintoye, Abugire, Sandra Appiah and Asana Hamidu (3:39.59).
 
Two athletes have been named U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Weeks. Conde-Turpin earned the honor on Dec. 15 and ASU’s Rami Balti won the award on Feb. 2.
 
The 2026 LSC Indoor Track and Field Athletes to Watch List included 18 men and 20 women.
 
The 2026 LSC Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held Feb. 27-28 at Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. All nine men’s teams and 11 women’s team can participate. West Texas A&M is the defending conference champion on both the men’s and women’s side. The Buffs have won seven titles overall, while the Lady Buffs have hoisted the trophy every year since 2014.
 
The NCAA Division II National Championship is set for March 13-14 at Virginia Beach Sports Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.

MEN’S TRACK
Rami Balti, Angelo State, Sr., Coaching, Sport, Recreation and Fitness Administration, Tunis, Tunisia
Angelo State’s Rami Balti won the 400-meter dash with a 46.68 at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M. Balti’s NCAA Division II provisional time is the second fastest in the country this season. Balti was also the anchor leg for the winning 4x400-meter relay team that posted a time of 3:09.52. The time, shared by Taylor Briggs, William Opare and Francis Patanpatan, is the fifth fastest in the nation.
 
MEN’S FIELD
Oyeyoni Oyewale-Johnson, West Texas A&M, Jr., Graphic Design, Accra Ghana
West Texas A&M junior Oyeyoni Oyewale-Johnson took gold in the triple jump with a 50’2” (15.29m) at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M. His mark, which is a personal best, ranks sixth in all of NCAA Division II this season and is tops in the LSC. Oyewale-Johnson topped several Division I competitors.
 
WOMEN’S TRACK
Blessing Akintoye, West Texas A&M, Jr., Health Science, Ogun State, Nigeria
West Texas A&M junior Blessing Akintoye broke a school record in the 200-meter dash with a 23.61 at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M. The time ranks second in all of NCAA Division II this season. Akintoye also ran the second leg of the Distance Medley Relay squad (with Sarah Koomson, Abigail Abugire and Kalkidan Vincendeau) that posted a 11:32.67, which also ranks second in the nation. Akintoye also has the country’s top 400-meter time (53.33) this season and is a part of the top 4x400 meter relay team (3:39.59).
 
WOMEN’S FIELD
Laniyah Curry, Oklahoma Christian, So., Nursing, Edmond, Okla.
Oklahoma Christian sophomore Laniyah Curry recorded the eighth best long jump in all of NCAA Division II with a 19’ 9.75” (6.04m) at the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan. Curry, who wins the league’s top weekly field athlete award for the second consecutive week, also broke the school record. The provisional mark is also tops in the LSC this season.
