LONE STAR CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

(Oct. 18 games)

OFFENSIVE
RJ Martinez, West Texas A&M, QB, Sr., Management, Austin, Texas
West Texas A&M senior quarterback RJ Martinez passed for 424 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Buffs to a 43-14 win over rival Eastern New Mexico. Martinez, who takes the league’s top weekly offensive award for the second time this season, was 26 of 43 and spread the ball around to 10 different receivers. He connected with Drew Lamar on a 66-yard TD pass on the game’s first play from scrimmage and the Buffs never trailed. Martinez was also not sacked. He is the only quarterback in the LSC this season with two games of five or more TD passes. Martinez’s play helped WT record its third consecutive and fourth victory over its last five games.

DEFENSIVE
Malcolm Liufau, Western Oregon, LB, Sr., Exercise Science, Kalihi, Hawaii
Western Oregon senior linebacker Malcolm Liufau had an interception, sack and forced fumble to lead the Wolves to a 31-28 over No. 13 UT Permian Basin. Liufau also had five tackles – four solo and two for a loss of eight yards. His forced fumble came in the red zone with 25 seconds to play as UTPB was driving for a potential go-ahead or tying score. The fumble was recovered on the six-yard line and WOU secured its first win over a ranked opponent since 2016. His INT came on UTPB’s first drive of the game. Liufau’s play helped the Wolves extend their winning streak to three games.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Alan Dobbins, Angelo State, KR, Fr., Finance, Del Rio, Texas
Angelo State freshman Alan Dobbins returned an onside kick 45 yards for a touchdown to help the No. 21-ranked Rams defeat Midwestern State 48-28. Dobbins’ return came in the fourth quarter after MSU had scored 14 straight points. His TD also helped the Rams snap a two-game skid. Dobbins is just the fourth player in the LSC to return a kickoff for a score this season.
