Thanks to four two medals, the West Texas A&M men lead after Day 1 of the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (Feb. 27) at Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
WT, which has won five consecutive conference crows, totaled 61 points to hold the advantage in the field of nine teams. Texas A&M-Kingsville is second with 37 points, 10 points ahead of third-place Oklahoma Christian. UT Tyler (24 points) is fourth, while Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico each have 22 points to round out the top five of nine teams.
WT’s Emeka Nmesirionye won the high jump (1.99m) and Adrian Legarreta prevailed in the 5,000 meters (14:12.84).
Day 1 individual golds also went to Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Django Segovia in the long jump (4.96m), Oklahoma Christian’s Solomon Ross in the weight throw (17.63m) and Eastern New Mexico’s Hemon Joseph in the long jump (7.48m). Ross’ throw was a school record.
UT Tyler’s distance medley team of Chris Kopecky, Stephon Nickerson, Brandon Jimenez, David Soto, Dakota Jimenez, Kason Miles won first place with a 10:02.87.
The meet concludes Saturday (Feb. 28) with action getting underway at 10 a.m. MT.
