Coming off a successful tournament week that had the Lone Star Conference atop team and individual leaderboards, the women and men turn attention to a pair of mid-October tournaments loaded with solid conference and region opponents.
 
LSC Women
Eight teams, led by defending team champion West Texas A&M, are scheduled to compete in the West Regional Preview Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 13-14) in Pueblo, Colo. WT is joined by Angelo State, DBU, Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State, St. Mary’s, and Western New Mexico in a 21-team field featuring teams from the LSC, RMAC and CCCA.
 
Week Five Review
  • National Preview (54 holes, Oct. 6-7): DBU posted an eight-stroke win in claiming the team title (904-311, 292, 301) and UT Tyler followed in third (913-305, 308, 300). West Texas A&M (6th, 937), Midwestern State (7th, 938) and St. Mary’s (8th, 939) finished among Top 10 teams. DBU’s Ella Cheek and UTT’s Karina Duran each carded a three-round 224 to tie for second as six LSC players finished among the Top 10 and all within four strokes of the medalist. Church and UTT’s Emerson Doyle each posted a tournament low round 70 – Church in round two and Doyle in round one.
  • St. Simon's Intercollegiate (54 holes, Oct. 5-6-7): Viviana Farias posted an eighth-place individual finish (220-75, 75, 70) as Texas A&M-Kingsville was 14th on the team leaderboard (953-329, 315, 309).

LSC Men
Nine LSC teams will compete in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational at the Amarillo Country Club (Texas) on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 14-15). Defending tournament champion Oklahoma Christian will be challenged by conference rivals Cameron, DBU, Midwestern State, UT Dallas, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler, Western New Mexico and host West Texas A&M in the 15-team tournament.
 
Week Five Review
  • The Hrnciar (54 holes, Oct. 6-7): The LSC went one-two-three as UT Permian Basin (849-280-280-289) outpaced runner-up DBU by 17 strokes (866) and host Cameron by 20 (869). UT Dallas was eighth (886). The only player to shoot under par during all three rounds, UTPB's Nizar Bourehim claimed a one-stroke victory (206-69, 67, 70) over teammate Ioan Rowe (207-72, 64, 71) and led six conference players finishing among the Top 10 individuals. Rowe's 64 was the lowest individual round in the tournament.
  • Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate (54 holes, Oct. 6-7): Oklahoma Christian battled an all-Division I field, tying at ninth (894-304, 295, 295). Alex Rigby collected 10 birdies and finished tied at 15th (218-78, 68, 72).
  • Skip Wagnon Invitational (54 holes, Oct. 6-7): Kongpop Kaikaew and Guillame Paquette each carded tournament-low 63s in the middle round to claim the top two places on the player board as St. Mary's led wire-to-wire for the team title (806-269, 264, 273) to defeat No. 4-ranked host Central Oklahoma. Kaikaew carded a 197 (68, 63, 66) with 16 birdies while Guillaume was two strokes back at 199 (67, 63, 69). Oklahoma Christian B squad placed 17th (878).
  • National Preview (54 holes, Oct. 6-7): Midwestern State senior Seth Bearden used 19 birdies and an eagle in a two-stroke win (203-68, 67, 68) for his first individual title of the season in leading the Mustangs to a runner-up team finish (838-287, 271, 280). Western New Mexico carded an 883 (295, 289, 299) to place 17th as Oscar Feschuk tied at 23rd (212-70, 71, 71).

WOMEN
Ella Cheek, DBU, Jr., Accounting, Sachse, Texas
Ella Cheek finished as runner-up on the individual leaderboard after carding an 8-over par (224) leading third-ranked DBU to victory at the National Preview. The junior battled through wind and rain in round one to finish 7-over par before rallying to fire a tournament-best 2-under par 70 in round two. Check shot a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish one stroke back of the individual winner and claim her fifth career top-three finish.
 
MEN
Kongpop Kaikaew, St. Mary's, Sr., Management, Rayong, Thailand
Kongpop Kaikaew turned in a 13-under, three-round 197 (68-63-66) on the par-70 Kicking Bird Golf Club to win the Skip Wagnon Invitational. In winning his first individual title of the year and second career, Kaikaew completed all three rounds at or under par for the fourth time in his career. His 63 in the second round ties for the second-lowest round recorded in the LSC this fall and ties as the second-lowest 18-hole total in St. Mary's history.
