Lone Star Conference women’s basketball league play has started, and six teams are 2-0: Eastern New Mexico, No. 4 Lubbock Christian, St. Edward’s, St. Mary’s, No. 5 Texas Woman’s and No. 12 West Texas A&M. New league member UT Dallas is the only team to not play a conference game yet.
Of the 17 teams, two remain unbeaten on the season: LCU (9-0) and StMU (7-0).
The LSC has three teams ranked in the top 12 of the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Poll: LCU (4), TWU (5) and WT (12). UTT is receiving votes.
Conference games continue this week with four games on Thursday and five on Saturday.
TWU is the favorite to win the LSC title this season, according the
preseason poll. WT senior guard Kyla Kane was voted
preseason player of the year.
The LSC women’s basketball tournament will feature the top eight teams and is set for March 6-8 at
Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Tickets will go on sale in February.
Due to being NCAA Division II provisional members, UTD and Sul Ross State are not eligible for the LSC tournament but are able to win the LSC regular season title and postseason awards.

OFFENSIVE
Averee Kleinhans, Texas Woman’s, G, Sr., Dietetics, Nacona, Texas
Texas Woman’s senior guard Averee Kleinhans Averee Kleinhans averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and five assists to help lead the No. 5-ranked Pioneers to a 2-0 start to conference play on the road against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International. Kleinhans had season-highs of 20 points in just 23 minutes against TAMIU against three steals against TAMUK. On the week, she shot 47 percent from the field, made 3 of 5 from 3-point range and hit all her five free throws. Kleinhans has helped TWU win six straight games and has scored in double figures in all eight games this season.
DEFENSIVE
Kendall Beck, St. Edward’s, C, So., Undecided, San Antonio, Texas
St. Edward’s sophomore center Kendall Beck pulled down 18 defensive rebounds, blocked four shots and led a unit that allowed just 31.1 percent shooting over a pair of conference wins against Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico. Beck’s 17 total boards against WNMU are tied for the most in a single game in the conference this season. She averaged 11.5 rebounds and also had two steals. On the offensive side, she chipped in 5.5 points per game with an assist as SEU won its fifth straight game.
